Six people were arrested in Hungary by a specialist anti-terrorism unit after a tip-off from an unnamed U.S. intelligence agency.
Over the weekend, the Hungarian Anti-Terrorism Center detained half a dozen young people, believed to include both males and females, in a beer hall in Budapest’s 16th district, the Hungarian outlet Telex reported.
The Hungarian Government Information Center (KTK) later confirmed that the country’s security services had received information from an “American partner” about conversations between a group about an apparent operation against targeting “protected persons.”
“Given the international events of the past few months, when several leading politicians were attacked by armed forces, the Hungarian services and the Counter-Terrorism Center are paying special attention to checking this kind of information and taking the necessary steps,” the KTK said.
It also told the news website Index on Monday that surveillance had revealed that the group was planning to buy weapons. When they were detained, the suspects were found only in possession of airsoft weapons and at least one deactivated weapon.
The Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office is proposing the arrest of one of the six individuals who was taken into custody by the National Investigation Bureau of the Emergency Police, Hungarian, the website Startlap reported on Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office told the Hungarian news agency MTI on Tuesday that the man is suspected of the crime of organizing against the constitutional order, which, if found guilty, comes with a five- to ten-year prison sentence.
Although details of the case remain sparse, there is speculation the suspects may have been planning an attack on events marking the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising against communist rule.
The Uprising erupted on October 23, 1956, when university students in Budapest organized a demonstration, urging civilians to gather at the Hungarian Parliament Building.
Soviet tanks and troops violently suppressed the revolt for 12 days before it ended on November 4. The crackdown resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries, and nearly 250,000 Hungarians fled the country in the aftermath.
