Polish player Ewa Pajor netted a hat-trick for Barcelona in a 7-1 derby win over Espanyol, making her the top scorer in the Spanish women’s top-flight LaLiga, with nine goals to her name so far this season.
The coach of Barcelona's women's team, Pere Romeu, made several changes to the lineup on Sunday after the “Pride of Catalonia” last Wednesday lost 0-2 to Manchester City in the first round of the group stage of the Champions League.
Simona Botero put Espanyol in the lead in the first half. After the break, Pajor, Caroline Graham Hansen and Alexia Putellas—the winner of the 2022 Golden Ball—entered the field, changing the course of the match.
Equalizing on 59 minutes, Pajor nodded in from close range following a delicious cross from Clàudia Pina, and just three minutes later Barca were celebrating once again after Putellas put them ahead.
The floodgates had opened, and Putellas netted a third on 65 minutes before Pina and Aitana Bonmati added their own names to the scoresheet in the 74th and 79th minutes.
The rout was not over. Putting the seal on a memorable night, Pajor made it six for Barca on 85 minutes before adding to her tally with a tap-in three minutes from time.
The Pole’s performance earned her the player of the match award and sent her to the top of La Liga’s goalscoring chart.
With nine goals to her name after just six games, Pajor now has two La Liga hat-tricks under her belt after previously scoring three in Barca’s 10-1 demolition of Granada.
In what's proving an impressive season for Poland’s Spanish contingent, Robert Lewandowski currently leads the scoring in the men’s league.
Sunday’s result leaves Barcelona’s women’s squad standing top of the league with 18 points, while Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid sit three points behind but with one game in hand.
On Wednesday, Barcelona take on Hammarby Stockholm in the second round of the group stage of the Champions League.
