Poland’s Magdalena Fręch delivered a stunning victory with ninth-seeded Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-2 to secure her spot in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, China.

This marks the 26-year-old’s first career appearance in a WTA 1000 quarterfinal, capping off a strong run on the hard courts of Wuhan.

Fręch’s victory came after an hour and 40 minutes of intense play, as she capitalized on her aggressive approach to overpower the higher-ranked Brazilian.

It was Fręch’s fourth encounter with Maia, and the Pole finally managed to claim her first win over the world No. 18.

“Beatriz is a great player, and I knew it would be tough. I had to play aggressively, and it worked out quite well for me,” Fręch said in a post-match interview.

Her victory over Maia sets up a challenging quarterfinal match against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.

Meanwhile, fellow Pole Magda Linette also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating eighth-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-3. Linette will now face American fourth seed Coco Gauff in her next match.

Absent from the Wuhan tournament is world No. 1 Iga Świątek, who is focusing on preparing for the upcoming WTA Finals in Riyadh from November 2-9.
