Polish tennis star Magda Linette was in fine form as she overcame Russian Daria Kasatkina (6:2, 6:3), seeded eighth, in the third round of the Wuhan Open on Thursday.

The win was Linette’s 14th top 20 win of her career and ensured her first career WTA 1000 quarterfinal, where she will face the big serving American Coco Gauff, WTA Tennis reported.

Linette, the world No.45, has hit top form form in recent weeks. Prior to the tournament in Wuhan, she competed in Beijing where she empathically beat world No.9 Jasmine Paolini.

Linette and Kasatkina have shared some keenly contested encounters in the past, facing one another six times. The Pole had won two, the Russians four, with Linette adding a third following Thursday’s duel, TVP Sport reported. In the first set, Linette broke her opponent three times, paving the way for a comfortable 6:2 win. The Pole took advantage of all three of her three break points and was far more efficient with points won on her second serve.

The 32-year-old once again dictated proceedings in the second set playing with smart efficiency and exploiting the break point opportunities when they arose.

Fellow Pole Magdalena Fręch also booked a place in the last eight and will face Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia at 14:30 (CET) on Thursday.
