The Portuguese head coach of one of Poland’s most successful football clubs, Legia Warszawa, is under criminal investigation for assault.

The District Prosecutor’s Office of Lublin-Południe in eastern Poland has brought two charges against Gonçalo Feio, Sport.pl reported, pertaining to his time as coach of Motor Lublin.

It is alleged that in March 2023, Feio threw a desk tray at the club’s chairman, Paweł Tomczyk, which cut his face and caused him a temporary loss of vision in one eye. He also threatened Tomczyk with physical violence.

Feio has been the center of attention this season at Legia, experiencing major highs and lows. After a decent start to the season, Legia have only won one of their last five matches, although that one victory was one of Legia’s most impressive in recent years: a 1-0 victory over Spanish side Real Betis (1-0) in the UEFA Conference League last Thursday.

Feio’s background

Feio is undoubtedly a talented coach, as he proved from his time with Motor Lublin in his first head coach role. He joined the club in September 2022 when they were bottom of II Liga (the third tier in Poland) and completely turned around their fortunes, winning promotion that season.

He left the club in March 2024, with the club performing remarkably well, placed fifth in the table.

However, controversy has dogged the 34-year-old coach wherever he has been. When he was an assistant coach with Wisła Krakow, he got into a scuffle with a security guard, whom he spat on following a misunderstanding. Prior to that, he left Raków Częstochowa following an altercation with team manager Kamil Waskowski.

In August, he got into hot water after making a bras d'honneur gesture and displaying his middle finger to the visitors stand following the final whistle of Legia’s match against the Danish side Brøndby.

Feio was due to meet Legia’s sporting director, Jacek Zieliński, on Tuesday evening to discuss his future. At the time of writing, neither the club nor the coach have made an announcement regarding the fallout from the meeting.
