Hubert Hurkacz, one of the best-known Polish tennis players, will not compete in this year’s Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 tournament which will have a big impact on his position in the ranking.
The tennis ace, born in the southwestern Polish city of Wrocław, won the last year’s edition and gained 1,000 ranking points (the “1000” part in the tournament’s name means that the winner scoops as many points to the world ranking). His absence in China means he will not be able to defend these points and will drop outside the top 10 of the ATP ranking.
This year the annual tournament for male professional players is set to be held in Shanghai, China, from September 30 to October 13. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) is the global governing body of men’s professional tennis, and the event in Shanghai is inferior in rank only to the Grand Slam tournaments.
Recent months have not been successful for Hurkacz, currently No. 8 in the ATP rankings. Due to injury, the 27-year-old tennis player missed the Olympic Games in Paris, and at the Grand Slam US Open, he dropped out in late August in the second round. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that he had parted ways — after five years of working together — with coach Craig Boynton. On Friday, the Pole lost to Britain’s Jack Draper 4:6, 4:6 in the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo.

Meanwhile in the women competition, Poland’s Magda Linette defeated Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima and advanced to the third round of the WTA 1000 tennis tournament in Beijing, China. In the next match, Linette, WTA rank No. 45, will face Italian Jasmine Paolini, No. 5.
She followed in the footsteps of her compatriot Magdalena Fręch (No. 31) who will take on the Russian Diana Shnaider (No. 16) after seeing off Alycia Parks in the second round.
World’s number one Iga Świątek withdrew from the tournament due to personal matters.
The WTA Tour — the women’s equivalent of the men’s ATP tour — is a worldwide top-tier tennis tour organized by the Women’s Tennis Association.
