Polish Border Guard officers have detained a Belarusian woman they said was trying to smuggle four undocumented migrants into Lithuania.
Officers stopped the woman’s Warsaw-registered car after it entered the country from Lithuania.
They found three Iranians and one Afghan hidden in the vehicle. None had the necessary papers to enter Poland.
The migrants were handed over to Lithuanian authorities and the woman was later released with a 10-year ban on entering the EU’s passport-free Schengen Area, Radio Free Europe reported on Wednesday.
The Border Guard also impounded the car as evidence in the case.
Poland has been experiencing heightened migratory pressure at its land border with Belarus since 2021, which it blames on a “hybrid war” policy of Minsk’s Alexander Lukashenko regime aimed at destabilizing the EU.
Border guards say this year, 22 people have been detained on the Polish-Lithuanian border for aiding and abetting illegal border crossings.
