ANO, the Czech right-wing populist opposition party led by Andrej Babiš, secured victories in 10 of the 13 contested regions during Czech regional elections, preliminary results show.
The elections took place amid devastating floods across Central Europe where at least 24 people have died.
In the hard-hit Czech Moravian-Silesian region, ANO's Josef Bělica, praised for his leadership during the crisis, led the party to victory.
ANO’s continued strong support mirrors its previous regional election successes and strengthens its position ahead of next year’s general election.
The party is also leading in the first round of voting for Parliament’s Senate, with 19 candidates advancing to runoffs next week, competing for 27 seats.
The Czech Senate plays a key role in constitutional matters and judicial appointments, with the ruling five-party coalition currently holding a majority.
However, ANO’s strong performance could alter the balance of power after the runoffs.
