Israeli police have said they arrested 29 people during mass protests in Tel Aviv, accusing them of vandalism, disorderly conduct, and attacking officers.

At least 700,000 people have participated in protests across Israel calling for a ceasefire and hostage deal, with an estimated 550,000 of them in Tel Aviv, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said, following the deaths of six hostages in Gaza as frustration mounted with the Israeli government for failing to secure a ceasefire deal.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters surged onto the streets of Tel Aviv on Sunday, and footage shows Israeli police officers clashing with protesters as they urged them to stop blocking traffic and used water cannons to disperse the crowd.

The protest organizers said the crowd in Tel Aviv was an “endless sea of protesters,” and Sunday’s demonstration was the city’s largest demonstration since the start of the war on October 7.

On October 7, during an attack on Israel, Hamas abducted at least 251 people and slaughtered about 1,200. It is not clear how many captives remain in Gaza.

Israel immediately launched a reactionary military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, over 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the October 7 assault.
