A Polish deputy foreign minister has called on his EU peers to start thinking about the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski attended an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Thursday, at which he urged member states to “start considering” using the money to aid Ukraine. To date, only interest on the approximately €200 billion has been used and in late July Kyiv received €1.5 billion.

He said that while the issue remains to be resolved from the legal perspective, political agreement is crucial.

“There wasn’t great approval but clearly no one protested either,” Bartoszewski was quoted by the Polish state news agency PAP as saying. “Evidently we’re moving in the direction of doing something.”

He said that during the meeting, Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, had appealed to the ministers to allow the use of weapons donated by the member states to strike targets within Russia from which attacks were being launched.

Bartoszewski said Poland, Denmark, France and the Netherlands all supported Kuleba’s position.
