It will be difficult to create a regional German gov’t without AfD, says expert

Germany is on the brink of a political shift as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is expected to make substantial gains in September’s regional elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg.

In an interview with TVP World, Dr. Stefan Meister, an expert from the German Council on Foreign Relations think tank, predicted that the AfD is poised to become the strongest party in Thuringia and possibly Saxony, creating a challenging situation for forming a regional government without its participation.

“It will be very difficult, especially in Thuringia, to create a government without AfD,” said Meister, adding that some view the AfD as neo-fascist.

The rise of the AfD is not just a local issue - it is likely to have broader implications for Germany’s federal government and its foreign policy, particularly regarding support for Ukraine and migration.

“I think that will also have an impact on right-wing populists in Central Europe,” said Meister.
