Women’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek will lead the charge of five Polish tennis players at the US Open, which stars on Monday.

Świątek is among the favorites to win the last Grand Slam of the year, but world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka has been in better form recently, claiming victory at the Cincinnati tournament and defeating the Pole in the semi-finals.

The world number one will also be seeking to bounce back from a disappointing Olympics where she lost in the semi-finals.

Świątek, who won the the US Open in 2022, will face Russian Kamilla Rakhimova (WTA 104) in the first round. She has also has a fairly favorable draw, with a potential second-round match against either Ena Shibahara (WTA 218) or Daria Saville (WTA 93).
If she progresses deeper into the tournament, she could face tougher opposition in the form of Americans Jessica Pegula (seeded No. 6) and Danielle Collins (No. 11), as well as Russian Mirra AndreyevaAndreeva (No. 21). Kazakhstan’s YelenaElena Rybakina (No. 4) is also in her half of the draw.

Two other Polish women will compete in the singles. Magda Linette (WTA 40), who got as far as the third round in 2020, and Magdalena Fręch (WTA 45), who made it to the second round last year.

The men’s game

In the men’s tournament, Poland’s highest rankedhighest-ranked player is the world’s 11th-seed Hubert Hurkacz . Despite being a top-20 player for several seasons, the 27-year-old has yet to make his mark at the US Open, having never made it past the second round, and expectations are not particularly high this year because the Pole is still recovering from a knee injury sustained at Wimbledon.

Breakthrough talent

One of Poland’s most exciting up-and-coming talents is 21-year-old Maks Kaśnikowski, who is having a breakthrough season. He recently made it into the top 200 for the first time and earned a spot in the US Open qualifiers.

He impressed in the preliminaries, seeing off three opponents and booking himself a place in the main draw, where he will face Spain’s Pedro MartinezMartínez (ATP 43) in the first round.

When do the Poles play?

On Monday, around 19:00 (CET), Magdalena Fręch and Maks Kaśnikowski will play their first-round matches. Magda Linette is scheduled to take the court around 22:00 (CET), while Iga Świątek will play her match on Tuesday at 18:00 (CET).

After Kaśnikowski's match, Linette and 16-year-old Jovic will appear on the same court. On Tuesday, Hurkacz will play his first match against Timofey Skatov at 17:00 (CET).
