Poland’s top mountain ultrarunner has set a new record after running across the 14 highest peaks in the Tatra mountains in less than 30 hours.
Roman Ficek obliterated the previous record set in 2020 by eight hours after completing the 80km Great Tatra Crown in 29 hours, 45 minutes.
Following his remarkable feat, delighted Ficek told radio station RMF24: “I passed three shelters along the way, but there was no time to eat, I only drank coffee, Pepsi and juice.
“Of course I had some carbohydrates to dissolve, or bars, or some gels, but that was basically all. I didn't eat any normal food for 30 hours at all.”
He added: “The first crisis came at the seventh peak, that’s where I had a more substantial descent and a miserable ascent, it was suffocating me,” he said.
“Then, after 2:00 at night I felt like I wanted to sleep, my vision started to waver, I had some strange hallucinations.”
Roman Ficek conquered the following peaks: Kiezmarski (2,558 m), Łomnica (2,634 m), Durny (2,623 m), Baranie Rogi (252.6 m), Lodowy (2,627 m), Pośrednia Grań (2,441 m), Sławkowski (2,452 m), Staroleśny (2,476 m), Gerlach (2,654 m), Kończysta (2,538 m), Ganek (2,462 m), Wysoka (2,560 m), Rysy (2,503 m), Krywań (2,494 m).
