A video purportedly showing a Ukrainian attack on a bridge over the River Seym in the Russian cross-border region recently invaded by Ukrainian troops was released on Friday.
Ukrainian soldiers entered Russia’s Kursk region on August 6, making their largest incursion into enemy territory since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.
The assault in Kursk, which marks the first incursion into Russia by a foreign force since World War II, has changed the narrative around the campaign waged by the Kremlin against Ukraine.
Reuters news agency was able to confirm the location of the alleged attack from the bridge design, lamp posts, handrail, trees, and terrain seen in the video which matched file and satellite imagery of the area.
The date could not be independently verified. However, the bridge is seen intact in satellite imagery taken before the release of the video.
Meanwhile, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson and a regional governor confirmed the destruction of a bridge in the Kursk region.
According to media reports, Kyiv has claimed to have taken full control of 82 settlements covering an area of 1,150 square kilometers (445 square miles) in the Kursk region since August 6.
On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which started in 2014.
This invasion, and the largest conflict in Europe since World War II, has caused hundreds of thousands of military casualties and tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilian casualties.
According to media reports, Moscow now controls about 18% of Ukrainian territory.
