Police are appealing for witnesses after a car fatally rammed into a woman before “violently” plowing into a group of people standing at a bus stop in Warsaw.

A 48-year-old woman who was hit on a zebra crossing has now been confirmed dead after being hit by the high speed car, as well as a 52-year-old woman who died of her injuries in hospital.

At least five others, including a three-year-old child, are in serious condition in hospital following the incident at around 10.30am on Tuesday.

According to witnesses, other victims were sent “flying” after being hit by the driver. Firefighters at the scene said 10 people were injured.

A spokesman for the Provincial Emergency Medical Service ‘Meditrans’ said that three women were in hospital with injuries to their head and lower limbs, and that a 3.5-year-old child was in a serious but stable condition.

Commenting online, one woman who rushed to help the injured said: “A man around 40 years old (I might add that he was the father of a small child, because there was a car seat in the car) hit a woman with a child at the crossing and then drove violently into a bus stop, knocking out a concrete bin on the way, which flew about 5-7 meters, miraculously avoiding two elderly ladies.

“Unfortunately, the woman died, probably before the ambulance arrived, maybe she died on the spot.

“It's likely that a man from the bus stop died, who, from what I can tell, had internal bleeding. A girl with injuries to her face and limbs was thrown a dozen or so meters.

“I took care of an elderly lady who had glass in her hair and probably in her ear. She said that a concrete bin flew 20 cm away from her and she was lucky because she got up from the bench to check the bus arrival time.

“She probably wouldn't have survived."

Grim photos have since emerged online showing the aftermath of the horror incident.

In one, ambulance crews can be seen desperately attending to the injured behind a shattered concrete bollard.

Another photo shows the mangled front of a Ssang Yong Tivoli belonging to the unharmed 45-year-old driver, who police say was sober at the time of the incident.

Posting on social media, police said: “We appeal to all people who witnessed the road accident that occurred in Warsaw today at ul. Woronicza 29 at around 10:30 to contact police officers [...] by phone or in person.

“Every piece of information, even seemingly insignificant, counts.

“Recordings from a mobile phone or a camera placed in a car can help to precisely determine the course of the event.”

The driver now faces eight years in jail.
