Belgian cyclist Thibau Nys of the Lidl–Trek team won the first stage of the Tour de Pologne race in southeast Poland on Monday, donning the leader’s yellow jersey.
The 81st Tour de Pologne multi-stage bicycle competition is being held from August 12 to 18.
After an uphill finish, Nys was three seconds ahead of Dutchman Wilco Kelderman (Visma–Lease a Bike team). Briton Lukas Nerurkar (EF Education–EasyPost team) took the third spot.
The general classification in road bicycle racing tracks overall times for riders in multi-stage races.
The Tour de Pologne started in the southwestern city of Wrocław. From the Centennial Hall – a UNESCO World Heritage site – the participants set off towards the town of Karpacz, a well-known ski resort in the Karkonosze Mountains in southwestern Poland, where the finish line, at a distance of 156.1km (97 miles), is located.
As every year, the world’s best teams are competing in the event.
In this 81st edition, the biggest name is two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike).
Last year, Slovenia’s Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious) won the 80th Tour de Pologne, finishing one second ahead of Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates). Third place went to Poland’s Michał Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers).
