Lithuania has accused Russia of failing to maintain security after its embassy in Moscow was smeared with red paint by a group of people wearing masks.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a strongly-worded protest note to the Russian Embassy in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital, on Monday, demanding Russia improve the protection of the Lithuanian diplomatic mission and prosecute those responsible.

“This morning, four masked individuals splattered the entrance to the Lithuanian Embassy in Moscow with red paint,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a communiqué.

“The Russian Federation police officers responsible for providing external protection for the embassy did not intervene during the attack, and it took the police half an hour to arrive,” said the ministry.

In the note, the Ministry demanded the Russian Federation take immediate action to ensure the embassy’s protection and prevent future disturbances or violations of the mission’s dignity.

Vilnius also asked why the security officers failed to respond during the attack and sought guarantees that similar incidents would be avoided in the future.

In 2022, in response to Russia’s military aggression on Ukraine, Lithuania recalled its ambassador to Moscow, Eitvydas Bajarūnas.
