Poland’s woodland management authority has proposed that the Polish government ban wood exports to non-EU countries.

The proposal, submitted to the Ministry of Climate and Environment, advocates a four-year prohibition, effective from January 1, 2025, until December 31, 2028.

Witold Koss, director general of State Forests, a government body managing state-owned Polish forests, told state news agency PAP that the ban aims to reduce the country’s wood trade outside EU borders.

“A clear declaration from the ministry was obtained that work on the law will begin swiftly so that it could be implemented at the beginning of 2025,” Koss said.

He added that a new set of rules concerning the sale of wood would also be introduced.

According to State Forests, Poland’s wood industry suffers from a lack of resources totaling 3 to 4 million cubic meters per year with the deficit being covered by imports.

In March, Climate Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska announced nine recommendations to reduce wood exports from Poland.

One of them aims to direct larger amounts of wood to the regular customers of the State Forests, as well as to buyers who process the wood in Poland.

The current ruling coalition parties, which took over power from the socially-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party late last year, have often criticized what they saw as excessive logging in Polish forests during the PiS administration.
