An unwitting WWII collector is facing up to eight years in jail after amassing an arsenal of ammunition, including grenades and artillery shells, at his home in northern Poland.
Police, including pyrotechnicians and counter-terrorist units as well as firemen and medical services, descended on the 50-year-old’s residence in the small town of Czersk after receiving a tip-off from concerned locals.
Inside the apartment and nearby garage, they found over 500 rounds of ammunition, 16 hand grenades, two artillery shells, as well as four gun barrels.
Police spokesman Łukasz Kirkuć said: “Thanks to information obtained, police officers secured an arsenal from World War II on one of the properties in the Czersk district.
“The man explained the possession of such a large arsenal by saying that he found it in the ground, digging it out during field work, and then brought it to his home and garage.”
Kirkuć added: “The man may soon face charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition after a ballistics report is issued.
“This crime is punishable by imprisonment from six months to eight years.”
