Iga Swiątek got over the disappointment of being knocked out in Thursday’s Olympic semi-final by winning the play-off for bronze against Anna Schmiedlova.

The world No.1 overpowered Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-1 looking self-assured on her serve and thundering back some terrific returns to her opponent.

Swiątek was strangely out of sorts on Thursday, hitting an uncharacteristic high number of unforced errors. But against Schmiedlova she looked calmer, more measured and her first serve was more on point.

However the Slovakian was not in the same class as Qinwen Zheng who overcame Swiątek to earn a place in Saturday’s final against the young Croatian Donna Vekic.

Swiątek welled up with emotion when she sat down after her victory, it was not clear whether that was due to happiness from earning a bronze or thoughts about what might have been.

The bronze medal represents their fourth of the Games so far, three bronze and one silver.
