Iga Świątek booked her place in the women’s singles Olympics semi-finals after her opponent, American Danielle Collins, retired in the third and final set.

World No. 1 Świątek started strongly, winning the first set 6:1. Collins, however, rallied in the second to win 6:2. Seeded eighth, Collins trailed off in the third and was 4:1 down when injury forced her to retire.

The Raszyn-born Świątek has become only the first Polish tennis player to reach the Olympic semi-finals.

For Świątek, her return to Paris comes just weeks after she won her third consecutive French Open. However, in the intervening period the 23-year-old Pole crashed out of Wimbledon in the third round in a shock defeat to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

That now appears to have been a temporary blip. Back to her imperious best at the Games, Świątek breezed her first three games with straight-set victories. Świątek will now face China’s Qinwen Zheng in Thursday’s semi-final.
