Poland’s men’s four-man rowing crew lived up to expectations by taking an Olympic bronze medal in Paris on Wednesday.

The team, consisting of Dominik Czaja, Mateusz Biskup, Miroslaw Zietarski and Fabian Baranski earnt Poland’s 20th medal in rowing in Olympic history. The Dutch took an early lead and did not relinquish it, leaving the Poles and Italians to battle it out for the remaining podium positions.
Around 500 m before the finishing line it looked like the Poles might claw back the Italian advantage. However, they did not have quite enough in the final stretch to make up the gap, ending up just 0.19 seconds behind the Italian crew.

The first time Polish rowers made it to the Olympic podium was in 1928 in Amsterdam, where the bronze medal was won in the four with helmsman Leon Birkholc, Franciszek Bronikowski, Edmund Jankowski, Bernard Ormanowski and helmsman Boleslaw Drewek.

Since then Poles have won four golds, four silvers and 12 bronze medals.

Polish rowers have consistently performed well in recent history, having not come home empty-handed from the Olympics since Sydney 2000.
