Hamas’ political chief has been killed in an airstrike in the Iranian capital, the Palestinian militant group has announced, claiming Israel was behind the attack.

Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards died when the building where they were staying in Tehran was struck in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

In a statement, Hamas said: “The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns to our great Palestinian people, to the Arab and Islamic nation, and to all the free people of the world: Brother, leader, martyr, Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, who was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also confirmed Haniyeh’s death and blamed Israel for it, adding that an investigation into the attack was underway.

So far, no details have been given about how Haniyeh was killed. The Israeli government has not claimed responsibility for the attack.

But Israel’s far-right heritage minister, Amichay Eliyahu, responded to the news with a post on social media, saying: “This is the right way to clean the world from this filth. No more imaginary ‘peace’/surrender agreements, no more mercy for these mortals.”

The Hamas chief, who was usually based in Qatar, was in Tehran on Tuesday attending the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.
