The Russian Defense Ministry attributed the crash to a technical malfunction.
The Su-34, a Soviet-era medium-range fighter-bomber, has seen considerable losses recently. In the spring of 2024, the Ukrainian military claimed to have shot down multiple such jets, worth approximately $36 million each.
Plane and helicopter losses have become quite frequent for Russia since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago. According to a report from the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Moscow has lost a total of 326 helicopters since 2022.
Just last week, three Russian helicopters were severely damaged when Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) launched an attack on the National Center of Helicopter Construction of Mil and Kamov in Moscow.
While the attack generated much attention among Moscow residents, the Russian authorities attempted to conceal the details of the operation and the damage it caused.
