Polish police will receive an additional €234 mln as part of next year’s state budget, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday during Police Day celebrations.

The Prime Minister had spoken earlier with Finance Minister Andrzej Domański and agreed to allocate additional financial resources for the police’s needs, such as equipment and logistics.

Minister Domański “undertook to implement [this decision] after consultation with the Minister of the Interior and Administration, Tomasz Siemoniak,” said Tusk.

“There is no rule of law without the police and no politician stands over you when you are on duty. You are the ones who protect the law.

“I am convinced that you will use this money well for the safety of Poland and Poles. The police must be well-equipped.”

Speaker of Parliament, Szymon Hołownia, who was also present at the central Police Day celebrations, paid tribute to police officers who "left for duty in the morning, putting on their uniforms for the last time, giving their lives so that others could live."

Since 1995, July 24 marks the Polish Police Day. On that day in 1919, the Polish Police was founded in Poland which was still in an unstable state having just regained independence after 123 years.

Polish Police Day serves as an occasion to lay wreaths and bouquets at plaques and monuments honoring those who died in the line of duty.
