A watercolor that had been missing since the Second World War has been returned to its rightful home at Kraków’s Wawel Royal Castle after it came to light on social media.

The Ministry of Culture announced on Friday that the painting had been restored to the castle’s collection.

The ministry said a photo of the painting had appeared on social media in the spring. When the ministry learned of the painting’s reappearance, they passed the information on to the police.

“Officers of the Criminal Bureau of Polish Headquarters identified the person who had posted the photograph of the item online and had wanted to sell it, and Poznań Police—after making enquiries—directly reached the person in possession of the lost watercolor,” the ministry said in a press statement.

The painting by Kajetan Stefanowicz, a lieutenant in the Polish Cavalry killed in the 1920 Polish-Bolshevik war, was rehoused at Wawel on July 15.
