Ewa Kopacz, of the Civic Platform, the main party in Poland’s ruling coalition, was re-elected as Vice-President of the European Parliament on Tuesday.
Kopacz, a former prime minister of Poland, is the only Pole in such a high position in the EU Parliament.
Following the appointment, she told public broadcaster Polskie Radio: “Entrusting me with the post of vice-president reflects the strong position of the Polish PO-PSL delegation in the European Parliament. It also signifies recognition of Poles who voted for a free and democratic Poland and Europe in the October 15 and European elections.”
She added: “I have always tried to perform my duties with the utmost commitment. As the European Parliament’s coordinator responsible for children’s rights, I focus on protecting the youngest and most vulnerable citizens, whose mental health and daily living conditions suffered significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also in connection with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing war there,” she added.
Kopacz has been an MEP and EU Parliament VP since 2019. She won her second term after receiving 572 out of 665 votes—the second-best result among 14 elected vice-presidents.
A pediatrician and GP before joining politics, Kopacz was the speaker of the lower house (Sejm) of the Polish Parliament from 2011–2014, the first woman to hold the office, as well as Poland’s prime minister from 2014–2015. She served as the minister of health from 2007–2011 in Donald Tusk’s government.
