One of Poland's medal hopefuls for the upcoming Olympic Games has been suspended for violating anti-doping regulations.

Sprint canoeist Dorota Borowska was found to have traces of an anabolic steroid in her system during a routine test in June.

The Polish Canoe Association has now said that the 28-year-old intends to appeal the suspension and request a B sample test.

However, given that the games begin on July 26, even if her appeal were successful, there would be insufficient time to go through all the necessary procedures.
Borowska told the website ‘Sportowy Poznań’: “I have never, ever consciously taken any illegal substance. I am so oversensitive about it that it is simply impossible. I do not believe what happened.

“This feels like a nightmare from which I will wake up in a moment. I will do everything to prove my innocence. I will not give up. I will not allow the destruction of many years of my honest work, the work of my coach, my staff and all those who helped me.”

Borowska won bronze and silver medals at the European Championships and the World Championships in both singles and doubles.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, she was fourth in the 200-meter individual race. In Paris, she had intended to compete in singles and also pair up with Sylwia Szczerbińska in the 500-meter doubles.
