Czechia’s Barbora Krejčíková held off the crowd favorite, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, to win the prestigious Wimbledon singles title 6-2 2-6 6-4 on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Czech specializing in doubles dominated the opening set with a near-perfect display but Paolini fighting back in the second set sent the showpiece into a decider.

The third set swung Krejčíková’s way. She then broke Paolini’s serve at 3-3, and came out victorious on her third match point.

The Wimbledon title adds to the Czech’s collection of achievements. In 2021, Krejčíková won the French Open.

By contrast, it’s another upset for the popular Italian player. Paolini, who lost the French Open final to Poland’s Iga Świątek a few weeks ago was hoping to become the first Italian player to win a Wimbledon singles title.
The Czech’s prize will be £2.7 million and leap from 32nd to 10th place in the WTA ranking.

Krejčíková, who also owns 10 doubles Grand Slam titles, including two at Wimbledon, is the latest in a long line of Czechs to win the singles at Wimbledon, following Markéta Vondroušová’s triumph last year.

Czechia: a tennis powerhouse

Barbora Krejčíková is altogether the fifth Czech, all of them women, to triumph in the Wimbledon Grand Slam singles.

Other Czech Wimbledon winners are Petra Kvitová, Martina Navrátilová, and Jana Novotná, Krejčíková’s first coach and mentor, who died of cancer in 2017, to whom Krejčíková dedicated her Saturday victory at Wimbledon.

The greatest Czech tennis player is without contest Martina Navrátilová, born in Prague although competing under the U.S. flag for most of her career. Navrátilová, who can boast an impressive nine wins at Wimbledon, was present at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Saturday to witness her Brno-born compatriot.
