A miner missing since a tremor struck the Rydułtowy coal mine in southern Poland on Thursday has been found alive three days later.
The rescue operation on Thursday initially recovered 76 out of the 78 miners trapped by the tremor 1,150 meters underground, who were sent down the shaft to perform maintenance work. 17 of them required hospitalization. Another one was found and brought to the surface on Thursday evening but was later pronounced dead.
“Before 2 pm [on Saturday], rescuers reached the miner who had been missing after the tremor in the Rydułtowy mine. He is currently being prepared for transport to the surface. The found miner is communicative and in contact. He has been treated by doctors,” said Leszek Pietraszek, President of the PGG mining company.
The rescued miner, a 32-year-old foreman, was awaiting an airlift by a Polish Medical Air Rescue (LPR) helicopter as of the writing of this article. PGG officials estimate that the operation to bring him to the surface would take about two hours.
A total of 84 rescue teams participated in the search operation.
