The Auschwitz Museum has initiated a partnership with a startup specializing in the automated moderation of toxic comments on social media using artificial intelligence.
The Auschwitz Museum, created as a memorial center at the site of Nazi Germany’s most notorious death camp in Poland, has a high online profile, which it is keen to protect.
“As a museum, we actively engage on platforms such as X, Facebook, and Instagram, sharing daily posts about the history of the German Nazi Auschwitz camp and short biographies of its victims,” stated Paweł Sawicki, responsible for the museum’s social media presence. “Our official profiles have nearly 2.5 million followers, and we receive an average of 4,000 to 5,000 comments each day.
“While most comments are respectful… we also encounter comments that dishonor the victims. Additionally, we face spam, trolling, data-stealing bots, and disinformation campaigns daily. Effective moderation is crucial to protect our virtual memory community from hate speech,” he wrote on the Auschwitz website.
To address these challenges, the museum has partnered with TrollWall AI.
The company will provide the facility with a tool that automatically hides hateful and vulgar comments on social media in real time.
The system supports Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, adhering to international legal standards defining hate speech.
“In our tests, the tool has proven highly effective,” Sawicki said. “TrollWall AI moderates comments in multiple languages, which is vital for us. We can also add specific keywords to the system. While it doesn’t entirely replace human moderators, it provides an additional layer of security, especially on Facebook and Instagram.
“Moreover, it speeds up the moderation process, allowing us more time to prepare content for publication.”
