Poland needs to find €1.9 trillion between 2028-2050 to achieve climate neutrality, says a report from the Poland Economic Institute (PIE).

According to the institute, this means €83 billion more per year will need to be invested as currently green investment funds have assets of €10 bn, which makes for only 3% of all of the assets held by investment funds in Poland.

By comparison the Baltic Power project building offshore wind farms was estimated to cost €4.5 bn last year, according to Polish investor energy giant Orlen.

The report said: “At the current stage of development of the green finance market in Poland, it will be difficult to obtain the necessary funds from the capital market.”

The institute went on to say that in the second quarter of 2024, there were 61 green investment funds operating in Poland.

Most of these, however, were classified as ‘light green’, meaning that the projects they were investing in had environmentally friendly aspects to them, but did not necessarily involve investment in green energy.
