Tottenham Hotspur are poised to sign Sebastian Szymański, with one Turkish portal reporting that the Premier League side are set to table a bid worth €25 million for the Fenerbahce star.
According to inside sources, Spurs are reportedly doing “everything possible” to sign the midfielder but could face resistance from legendary coach Jose Mourinho. Joining the Turkish side in June, “the special one” has heaped praise on the 25-year-old Pole, admitting that he had previously scouted him.
“I’ve always followed him,” said Mourinho. “He was on my transfer list when I was at Roma and I’m very happy that our paths have now crossed at Fenerbahce.”
Beginning his career at Legia Warsaw, Szymański later moved to Dynamo Moscow before switching to Fenerbahce in 2022. First signing on a one-year loan, the move was made permanent last summer after he impressed during his initial 12-month period.
Scoring 19 goals in two seasons, Szymański has been a hit in Turkey and become a fan favorite. Known for his mazy dribbling and goal-scoring prowess, the Pole had previously been tracked by Manchester United, Chelsea and Milan.
Capped 36 times for his country, Szymański had been widely tipped to shine at Euro 2024. Instead, however, he performed well below expectations and was substituted after just 45 minutes against Holland.
Despite disappointing in Germany this summer, foreign suitors have continued to circle. Although Tottenham have emerged as favorites to land his signature, they could face competition from Lazio and Marseilles.
Should Szymański sign for Spurs, he will join three other Poles currently plying their trade in the Premier League: Jan Bednarek (Southampton), Jakub Moder (Brighton), and Jakub Kiwior (Arsenal).
