Surgeons are battling to save a Polish medic’s leg after he was wounded in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk.
The medic was evacuated back to Poland and is now undergoing surgery in Lublin, eastern Poland.
“He is in a stable situation but we are fighting to save his leg,” said Damian Duda, CEO of W Międzyczasie, an NGO supplying medical aid on Ukraine’s frontline.
“The combat medic was hit in the leg by shrapnel during an artillery barrage,” Duda added. “The wound was so serious he had to be evacuated back to Poland.”
The medic, whose identity has been kept secret, was part of a 40-strong team of volunteers that have been serving in Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Working on a rotational basis, around three to four Polish medics work at any given time in the combat zone.
Found in the Donbas region, fierce fighting has been raging for weeks around Luhansk.
In recent days, Russia has heightened its attacks around Ukraine, launching a wave of missiles at Odesa and striking a power plant in Rivne with drones. On Monday, 33 people were killed in Kyiv following a missile attack.
