Armenia's Foreign Minister is scheduled to attend the NATO summit in Washington, signaling a major step toward strengthening ties with Western nations, the Armenian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.

Minister Ararat Mirzoyan will take part in NATO summit activities alongside NATO partners, participate in events commemorating the organization's 75th anniversary, and hold bilateral meetings, as confirmed by a ministry spokesperson via social media.

Although Armenia is not a NATO member and belongs to the Collective Security Treaty Organization led by Russia, it has recently shifted towards closer relations with Western countries due to Russia's restrained response during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Armenia's Ministry of Defense revealed plans for joint military exercises with the United States, focusing on peacekeeping missions. The exercises are scheduled to take place in Armenia from July 15-24.

Geopolitical changes

The diplomatic realignment coincides with recent geopolitical shifts, notably Washington's decision to suspend military exercises in Georgia amid concerns regarding a pro-Russian trajectory in the country following the enactment of Georgia's Foreign Agents Law.

The law, targeting non-governmental organizations, was passed despite a presidential veto being overturned by the ruling Georgian Dream party-controlled parliament on May 28.
