Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh set a new world record in the women’s high jump on Sunday, clearing 2.10 meters at the Paris Diamond League to break a mark that has stood since 1987.

The 22-year-old world champion brushed off suggestions that the jump had made her the clear favorite for the Paris Olympics, which begins on July 26.

“I am looking forward to the Olympic Games here. I am sure it will be a great competition with an even better atmosphere, but I know it will be hard and very competitive,” she said.

The Ukrainian outperformed the world indoor champion, Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers, with both competitors clearing the 2.01 meter height on their second attempts.

While Olyslagers failed to clear 2.03 meters in three attempts, Mahuchikh succeeded on her second try.

Mahuchikh, who took bronze at the Tokyo Games, raised the bar to 2.07 meters and cleared it again on her second attempt, setting a Ukrainian record.

She then elevated the bar to 2.10 meters, which she cleared on her first try, earning applause from the audience at Stade Charlety in southern Paris as she bettered Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova’s record from 1987 by one cm. “Finally, I signed Ukraine into the history of world athletics,” said Mahuchikh, who fled her home city of Dnipro in early 2022 following the Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian president Volodymr Zelenskyy also congratulated Mahuchikh for setting the new world record.

“Thank you, Yaroslava, for raising the Ukrainian flag so high and achieving this victory for our country and people. Each such victory is incredibly important for our strength and unity,” he wrote on social media platform X. Another record broken

Mahuchikh was not the only athlete to set a new record at this year’s Diamond League. In another event, Kenya’s long-distance runner Faith Kipyegon also shattered the world record in the 1500m race, clocking 3:49.04, and improving her previous mark by 0.07 seconds. Jessica Hull took second, establishing an Australian record of 3:50.83, and Laura Muir claimed third, setting a new British record at 3:53.79.

Just a year earlier, Kipyegon had run the 1500 meters in 3:49.11 in Florence. How did the Polish athletes fare?

Polish sprinter Natalia Kaczmarek took second place in the 400m race at the Diamond League, crossing the line in 49.82 seconds. Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, the reigning world champion, clinched victory with a time of 49.20 seconds. In the 100m sprint, Ewa Swoboda secured third place with a time of 11.16 seconds.

Ahead of Swoboda were Patrizia van der Weken from Luxembourg, finishing in 11.06 seconds, and Gina Miriam Bass Bittaye from Gambia, who clocked 11.09 seconds.

Kaczmarek narrowly defeated Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain by mere thousandths of a second in the 400m race. This competition marked the first outing for the Polish record holder since the national championships in Bydgoszcz, where she successfully defended her title. As the European champion, she remains a strong contender for an Olympic medal in Paris. The Diamond League serves as the final test for athletes before the Paris Olympics kick off in just 19 days.
