Piotr Zieliński is to become the first Pole to ever play for Inter Milan after he put an end to months of speculation to sign for the Italian giants.

Although the transfer has long felt like an open secret, only yesterday did the 30-year-old put pen to paper to put the seal on a contract reportedly worth €4.5 million per year.

The move has been met enthusiastically by both fans and media, with sports journalist Alessandro De Felice praising Zieliński for his “exemplary professionalism”, passion and commitment.

"He's a very valuable asset, and one of the best midfielders in Italy,” said De Felice. “He knows the specifics of Serie A, speaks Italian, and has international experience. Above all, he was a free agent. Without doubt, this is one of the best moves Inter could have made.”

First moving to Italy when he was just 17 years old, Zieliński’s Italian adventure started at Udinese in 2012. Four years later, he had impressed enough to earn a €16 million move to Napoli.

Chalking up 281 Serie A appearances for Napoli, he became something of a club legend with career highlights including a goal against Barca in the Europa League and a brace against Liverpool in the Champions League.

A Coppa Italia trophy in 2020 was followed by an extraordinary Serie A title in 2023. Rejecting lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia, his loyalty won him further fans at the club.

The title defense, however, did not go to plan. Changing manager twice during the season, Napoli meekly surrendered their title to finish a lowly tenth.

Winding his contract down to leave as a free agent, Zieliński is seen as the perfect fit for Simone Inzaghi’s Inter midfield. “He can play on the right or left if needed, and can play well both defensively and in attack,” said De Felice. “He will provide continuity as well as goals and assists.”

Inter, who won Serie A at a canter last season, will kick-off their new season away at Genoa in August.
