Fire engulfs research facility near Moscow, several reported dead

At least eight people have died in a massive blaze that engulfed a research facility near Moscow on Monday.

The fire at the Platan Research Institute, situated in the town of Fryazino in the Moscow region, was reported by local media and several Russian Telegram channels, including Mash, which claims to have close ties with the country's security services. Two people jumped to their death from the top floors of the burning eight-storey building, while six others succumbed to the flames inside, reported the state-run TASS news agency.

One man was shown jumping from the upper floor of the building by the Baza Telegram channel. Another, with serious burns, fell from the upper floors, footage published by Shot Telegram channel showed.

Reports indicate that some individuals remained trapped on the upper floors, unable to evacuate as the fire raged.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.

The Platan Research Institute develops radio-electronic systems for Russia’s Defense Ministry. This is the second major calamity to hit Russia within 24 hours. On Sunday, at least 20 people, including an Orthodox priest and several police officers, were killed in multiple attacks carried out in the Russian region of Dagestan.
