Russian cruise missiles and drones attacked western Ukraine overnight, and, according to a newspaper quoting the Ukrainian national public broadcaster Suspilne, explosions were reported in Lutsk and Vinnytsia.
The Lviv, Zaporizhzhia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions were also struck, says the Kyiv Post (KP).
The Ukrainian Air Force issued a series of alerts around 3am local time (0000 GMT), as it “tracked the routes of drones and missiles in Ukrainian airspace,” KP reported on Saturday.
According to the Ukrainian state-run news agency Ukrinform, the Russian military attacked an energy facility in the Lviv area during the overnight attacks.
The daily states that Maksym Kozytskyi, governor of Lviv Regional State Administration, wrote on his Telegram account: “The enemy launched a missile attack on a critical energy infrastructure facility in the Lviv region. A fire broke out. Firefighters are already working on the site.”
Meanwhile, AFP news agency has reported that the Ukrainian energy ministry has said: “Equipment at Ukrenergo facilities in Zaporizhzhia and Lviv regions was damaged,” adding that, in Zaporizhzhia, two employees were wounded and hospitalized.
Social media reports, cited by the paper, allegedly “show a fire burning in the early morning hours in Stryi, a city 70 kilometers south of Lviv where several energy facilities are located.”
According to KP, Ukrinform announced that “residential buildings and kindergartens in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk were also damaged during the missile attack.”
Ruslan Martsinkiv, mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, was quoted as saying by KP that “Unfortunately, there is damage to housing and a kindergarten: the windows were broken there.”
