Foil fencer Julia Walczyk-Klimaszyk is celebrating after winning bronze at the European Fencing Championship and claiming the first European Championship podium place of her career.

Ranked seventh in the world, Walczyk-Klimaszyk edged past the Hungarian Flora Pasztor in her first outing of the tournament before beating France’s Pauline Ranvier 15:11 in the next round.

In the quarter-finals, the Pabianice fencer eased past Hungary’s Kata Kondricz 15:8 before succumbing to 22-year-old Darija Myroniuk in the semi-finals.

Though only 115th in the world rankings, the Ukrainian beat Walczyk-Klimaszyk 15:11. Despite defeat, Walczyk-Klimaszyk’s run was enough to secure a bronze medal.

In total, Poland has won nine gold, 10 silver and 34 bronze individual medals in the history of the European Championships, and 32 medals in the team disciplines.

Though Walczyk-Klimaszyk won gold at last year’s European Games, this year’s bronze at the European Championship represents the pinnacle of the 27-year-old’s fencing career.
