Police officers from Krosno Odrzańskie, a town in western Poland, detained four illegal migrants after they were spotted by a drone operator hiding in the middle of a pond, up to their necks in water, police reported on Wednesday.
Police were initially on the trail of the migrants after a Krosno Odrzańskie traffic policeman signaled for the driver of a Ford to stop a few days ago in the village of Radnica. Subsequently, the driver sped away, and the policemen gave chase.
“The Ford driver, while fleeing, forced cars coming from the opposite direction to brake violently. He created a danger on the road,” Krosno Odrzańskie police spokeswoman Cmdr. Justyna Kulka said.
Near the village of Czetowice, the Ford driver drove down a blind alley and abandoned the car. The driver and passengers fled into the forest, pursued by police officers.
“A fire department with a boat and a drone operator from the forestry division were called to the scene,” Cmdr. Kulka said.
The drone operator determined the men’s exact locations, after which they were detained.
“They are citizens of Yemen, Syria, and Afghanistan, ranging in age from 17 to 36,” Cmdr. Kulka said.
The men heard accusations of illegally crossing the Belarusian border into Poland and attempting to cross the border from Poland into Germany.
