The Euro 2024 Group F clash between Turkey and Georgia on Tuesday evening was a high-octane all-action affair, not only on the pitch, as riots took place outside the Dortmund stadium and at a fan zone in Gorzów Wielkopolski, western Poland.

Emotions were running high before, during, and after the game, with Georgia making their debut at the Euros and Turkey fans turning out in droves, with so many of them having permanently relocated to Germany.

The Polish city of Gorzów Wielkopolski, located on the Warta River, has set up a fan zone for the tournament on the eastern boulevard.

Turks and Georgians gathered there, and just after the final whistle, at around 8 p.m. local time, scuffles broke out. The violence was captured on film.

“A while ago, I had to call the police about a brawl between several drunk Georgia and Turkey fans on the boulevard in the fan zone after the final whistle. The Turks won, although Georgia was better,” Jacek Bachalski, who watched the match from the fan zone, told the website gorzowianin.com.

The fans also clashed inside Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion prior to kick-off, where punches and random objects were thrown before they were separated by riot police. The countries share a border approximately 270 km (170 miles) long. Earlier in the day, there were no indications of any disturbances as both groups of fans mingled in Dortmund’s city center.

Due to heavy rain, fans seated in the lower levels of the stadium had to seek shelter. Some fan zones across Germany are not opening on Tuesday due to the predicted bad weather.

On the field, the pundits were largely in agreement that the match was the game of the tournament thus far, as the teams went toe-to-toe, playing expansive football and constantly pushing for goals.

Although Georgia arguably shaded it, creating better chances, Turkey ran out 3-1 winners, and thanks to some spectacular goals. Mert Müldür’s sweetly struck volley will particularly live long in the memory.
