Talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski is back in training and expected to play in Poland’s forthcoming match against Austria on Friday.
Despite being named on the bench for Poland’s opening game of Euro 2024, Lewandowski failed to appear on the pitch yesterday.
Putting in a spirited performance against the Netherlands, Poland ultimately lost 2-1 having surrendered a surprise early lead. Though chasing the game late on, coach Michał Probierz opted against throwing Lewandowski into the fray after the forward picked up a thigh injury during Poland’s final warm-up game last week.
However, hopes are now high that Poland’s all-time top scorer will return to action for Friday’s crunch match against Austria. Earlier on Monday, Lewandowski joined teammates for a light training session conducted in front of the press pack.
Trotting out with a bandaged thigh, Lewandowski appeared relaxed as he trained alongside other players who hadn’t featured on the field yesterday.
Paweł Dawidowicz, who failed to play yesterday after sustaining an injury in the same friendly that left Lewandowski hobbled, also trained and will be available for selection on Friday.
Picking up knocks against the Dutch, Bartosz Salamon and Piotr Zieliński are both anticipated to make a quick recovery as are Poland’s other walking wounded.
Speaking to the press, team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski reported: “Bartosz Salamon suffered an ankle and hand injury during the match. After a full checkup, he should be ready to resume full training the day after tomorrow at the latest.”
Jakub Piotrowski trained individually today, while Michał Skóraś and Piotr Zieliński should also be ready.
Poland’s lead-up to the tournament has been beset with misfortune. Juventus forward Arkadiusz Milik was forced to pull out of the squad after getting injured in the first 90 seconds of Poland’s friendly against Ukraine. Just days later, things went from bad to worse when Lewandowski, Dawidowicz, and Karol Świderski all racked up injuries. In the case of the latter, Świderski limped off after injuring himself while celebrating the opening goal.
