Warsaw’s Chopin Airport handled 1,843,828 passengers in May, its highest-ever figure for that month, surpassing the previous record set in May 2019 by 12%.

Anna Dermont, a spokeswoman for the airport, said that May 12 saw a peak of 66,129 passengers in a single day. The airport hopes that, with the summer holiday season starting, passenger numbers will continue to soar.

From January to May, over 7 million travelers used Chopin Airport, with London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Brussels as the top destinations. For charter flights, popular locations included Antalya, Marsa Alam, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Fuerteventura.

The airport also reported a record in cargo handling, with over 9,000 tons processed in May, bringing the total for the first five months of the year to more than 43,700 tons.

Recent developments at the airport include state-owned carrier LOT Polish Airlines launching new routes to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and Oradea in Romania.

Additionally, for the summer 2024 season, Ethiopian Airlines plans to launch flights to Addis Ababa, expanding Chopin Airport’s connections to 123 destinations.

The airport, the largest in Poland, served 18.5 million passengers in 2023 and is projected to handle 20.5 million in 2024, a 10% increase. For the first time, it expects to exceed 20 million passengers in a single year.

On April 29, marking 90 years of operations at the facility, its owner, Polish Airports, revealed an expansion plan. Construction work is set to start in 2026 and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2029.

Once this is finished, the airport's capacity is projected to increase to around 30 million passengers a year.
