The Russian anti-submarine ship “Admiral Levchenko” is engulfed in flames in the Barents Sea after an engine malfunctioned and caught fire.

According to the spokesperson for Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces, Dmytro Pletenchuk, fire broke out during exercises, and a “fight for survival” is underway.

“Enemy equipment is burning, more precisely, the large anti-submarine ship ‘Admiral Levchenko’ in the Barents Sea,” said Pletenchuk. “Its fight for survival continues. Let’s hope in vain,” he added. The likely cause of the incident is improper engine maintenance.
Reportedly, several hundred people were on board.

The “Admiral Levchenko” is originally a Soviet, then Russian, ship that has been in service since 1988. It is a missile destroyer of Project 1155 (a series of anti-submarine destroyers built for the Soviet Navy), primarily designed for destroying enemy submarines.

According to Ukrainian sources, since the beginning of the invasion in 2022, the Russian Navy has lost 14 ships, with another 6 damaged (excluding Admiral Levchenko). While this is a significant blow for a country without its own fleet, it’s important to note that the Black Sea Fleet alone has at least 40 vessels.

The most painful maritime loss for Russia was the sinking of the missile cruiser “Moskva” in 2022. It was hit by a Ukrainian-made missile. Western intelligence data suggested this was possible due to corruption during its overhaul, which led to the absence of modern defense systems that could have protected it.

On Sunday, the Ukrainian side reported another success, but this time in the air. They managed to destroy a pride of the Russian air force: the multirole combat jet Su-57.
