Natalia Kaczmarek won gold in the 400 meters event at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, smashing the Polish record that has stood for 48 years.
The Pole clocked 48.98s, which is the best result in Europe this season. Kaczmarek finished superbly, overtaking Ireland’s representative Rhasidat Adeleke (49.07).
Setting the new national record, Kaczmarek bested the legendary athlete Irena Szewińska, who ran 49.28s at the Summer Olympics in Montreal, by 0.3s.
