Polish veteran forward Arkadiusz Milik has been left cursing his luck after an injury sustained during Friday’s friendly against Ukraine ruled him out of the upcoming Euros.
Hauled off with just two minutes on the clock, the 30-year-old Juventus player underwent an arthroscopy on his left knee this morning.
On their website, his club wrote: “The operation, the very first of a first team player performed directly at J|Medical [the Juventus clinic], was conducted by Professor Roberto Rossi and was deemed a success. The player will begin his rehabilitation tomorrow with the aim of resuming competitive activity as soon as possible.”
For Milik, the news will not alleviate the heartbreak of missing out on another major championships. Three years ago, Milik missed out on Euro 2021 after picking up another knee injury on the eve of the tournament.
Last representing his country in November, a healthy run of club form towards the end of the season saw Milik recalled to the national side. Named in Poland’s preliminary squad last week, his hopes of making the final cut for the Euros were dashed following an early collision with Ruslan Malinovskyi.
Writing on Instagram yesterday, Milik said: “It's a very difficult time for me. I know injuries are part of sports and they usually come at the worst possible time but there's no way to prepare for them. I am very sorry that I will not be able to play for my country at the Euros and help the team achieve our common goals.”
He added: “But no matter what, I'll root for the boys on my team to the end. I am right with you! I also want to thank you very much for all the messages. Your words of support would mean a lot to me at this difficult time. I am positive and wish my team all the best at the Euros! We have great players, let's be with them and do our best rooting for Poland at the Euro.”
According to reports, Milik, capped 73 times for Poland, will be out for the next 30 to 40 days.
