On the second day of the European Championships in Rome, Polish athletes secured two bronze medals.
Pia Skrzyszowska claimed third place in the 100m hurdles, the second-best result in the history of the country's “queen of sports” with a time of 12.42.
Meanwhile, Michał Haratyk, with a throw of 20.94m, finished third in the shot put.
In the 100m hurdles, French athlete Cyréna Samba-Mayela triumphed, setting a European Championship record of 12.31. The silver medal went to Swiss athlete Ditaji Kambundji, who improved the Under-23 European record to 12.40.
“This medal tastes different from gold, with a worse result. I was counting on a personal record. I even thought about the result of 12.30. However, I am getting closer to the Polish record, and today I have already achieved the second-best result in the history of Polish athletics,” commented Skrzyszowska.
The Polish hurdler became the European champion in Munich two years ago, but this time the level of competition was much higher. Saturday’s race was the fastest in the event’s history.
In the shot put, Italian Leonardo Fabbri triumphed, ahead of Croatian Filip Mihaljević. Haratyk pushed 20.94 in the first series, which is his best result of the season. The host athlete improved the European Championship record to 22.45, and the second Mihaljević achieved 21.20.
32-year-old Haratyk stood on the EU Championships podium for the third time. Six years ago in Berlin, he was the best, and in 2016 in Amsterdam, he won silver.
After two days, the Italians are clearly leading in the medal classification. Their representatives have stood on the podium ten times, winning five gold, four silver, and one bronze medal. The Poles, with two bronze medals, are in 15th place.
