Voting in the European Parliament elections began in Poland at 7 a.m. (local time) on Sunday.
Poles are casting their votes to elect 53 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from a pool of 1,019 candidates.
Among the candidates, 53% are men and 47% are women. The oldest candidate, running in the Pomorskie province, is 88 years old, while the youngest, running in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie province, is 21. The average age of the candidates is 48.
A total of 28,952,443 voters are eligible to participate in the voting. The elections are taking place in 31,830 polling stations, of which 29,735 are permanent and 1,789 are special. Abroad, 299 polling stations have been established, including 7 on ships.
A total of 11 committees have submitted electoral lists, of which 7 have registered candidates in all 13 constituencies. List number 1 in the European Parliament elections is Third Way, number 2 is Confederation, number 3 is Nonpartisan Local Government Activists, number 4 is Polexit, number 5 is the Civic Coalition (KO), number 6 is the Left, and number 7 is Law and Justice (PiS).
The country’s National Electoral Commission (PKW) will hold four press conferences on Sunday. The first press conference is scheduled for 10 a.m., the next at 1:30 p.m., when data on voter turnout as of 12 p.m. will be provided. The third conference is at 6:30 p.m.; at that time, turnout data as of 5 p.m. will be given. The last PKW conference is planned for 10 p.m.
The electoral silence continues until the end of voting at 9 p.m. During this time, electioneering, convening meetings, organizing marches and demonstrations, making speeches, or distributing election materials is prohibited. In the polling station, displaying symbols, signs, and writings associated with candidates and electoral committees is forbidden. Electoral silence also applies to the internet.
During the electoral silence, it is also prohibited to publish pre-election polls regarding voter behavior predictions, election results, or polls conducted on the day of voting. A fine may be imposed for breaking the ban on electioneering.
