The German government has introduced temporary border controls in anticipation of Euro 2024, aiming to protect against terrorism, cyberattacks, and hooliganism.
According to “Die Zeit,” the new border controls require travelers to carry necessary documents, even those from the Schengen Area. Airports will also implement checks.
“The federal police will protect German borders, airports, and railways. While residents eagerly await the European Championship in our country, their safety remains our top priority,” said Nancy Faeser, Germany’s Minister of the Interior.
“Our focus ranges from the threat of Islamist terrorism to hooliganism and cyberattacks,” she added.
Temporary border checks are not a new solution in Germany, as a year ago, similar measures were introduced on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.
Security during the championships will be bolstered by 580 foreign police officers, who will be deployed to railway stations and other key locations.
The temporary checks are to remain in place until July 19.
Euro 2024 is set to start on June 14, 2024, with the opening match being held in Munich. The tournament will run for a month, culminating with the final on July 14, 2024.
